Post-countershock arrhythmias in untreated and digitalized dogs.

چکیده
Recent studies suggest that countershock can stimulate cardiac autonomic nerves and that the resulting release of norepinephrine contributes to postcountershock (PCS) arrhythmias. /J-Adrenergic receptor blocking agents, reserpine, cocaine, and cardiac-denervated preparations were used to evaluate this hypothesis in dogs under pentobarbital anesthesia. The suitability of the dog as an experimental system was examined. In the normal dog, the duration of PCS arrhythmia caused by a countershock of given energy was increased 100% by ouabain (0.05 mg/kg iv). In both normal dogs and dogs given ouabain (0.05 mg/kg iv), dicbloroisoproterenol, pronethalol, and propranolol reduced the duration of PCS arrhythmia; reserpine, a norepinephrine depletor, reduced the duration of PCS arrhythmia; cocaine, a norepinephrine-uptake inhibitor possessing antiarrhythmic properties, increased the duration of PCS arrhythmia; denervation of the heart reduced the duration of PCS arrhythmia. Ouabain (0.05 mg/kg iv) reduced the duration of PCS arrhythmia in dogs with denervated hearts. These findings indicate that PCS arrhythmia in dogs is norepinephrine dependent. Evidence indicated that ouabain has an antiadrenergic action on the heart also is presented. ADDITIONAL

Cardioversion and the digitalized patient
Transthoracic synchronized direct current discharge or cardioversion was introduced nearly 25 years ago to restore sinus rhythm in patients with diverse tachyarrhythmias (I). This simple, expeditious and nearly complication-freemethod has withstood the test of time. The likelihood of serious adverse reactions is related more to the underlying mechanism being treated than to the electrical disch...
متن کاملDiphenylhydantoin prevention of arrhythmias in the digitalis-sensitized dog after direct-current cardioversion.
an average of 155 watt-seconds was required to produce ventricular tachycardia. Immediately after recovery from digitalis toxicity, an average of 23 watt-seconds produced ventricular tachycardia. The administration of diphenylhydantoin at this time immediately increased the threshold required for ventricular tachycardia to an average of 363 watt-seconds. In eight studies, diphenylhydantoin was ...
متن کاملEffect of oxprenolol on adrenaline-evoked ventricular arrhythmias in dogs anaesthetized with halothane in oxygen.
The effect of oxprenolol (CIBA 39,089-Ba), a recently introduced adrenergic betareceptor antagonist, on adrenaline-evoked ventricular arrhythmias was studied in atropinized dogs anaesthetized with halothane in oxygen. The anti-arrhythmic activity of oxprenolol was due to specific blockade of beta-receptors. The block produced was surmountable in nature and larger doses of adrenaline re-evoked v...
متن کاملAge-dependent electrocardiographic and echocardiographic changes in German Shepherd dogs
By causing numerous changes in the cardiovascular system, ageing leads to a decreased threshold for clinical manifestation of heart disease. The aim of this study was to define the existence of cardiac structural and functional changes in healthy dogs of different age. Radiographic, electrocardiographic (ECG) and echocardiographic examinations of 20 clinically healthy German Shepherd dogs were ...
متن کاملCardioversion and digitalis drugs: changed threshold to electric shock in digitalized animals.
• Cardioversion is now widely accepted as the method of choice for terminating a number of atrial, nodal and ventricular arrhythmias." The technique consists of administering from a capacitor a specific underdamped monophasic electrical pulse across the intact chest. When the heart is exposed to electrical energy, there is a risk of producing ventricular fibrillation. With this new technique, s...
